Zoom vs Google Meet: which video conferencing app is the best?

COVID-19 has made video conferencing software a necessary technology for both businesses and consumers.

In fact, it has become a key component to continue smart working, allow for distance learning arrangements, and stay in touch with family and friends during this period of isolation.

Among the most popular video conferencing apps on the market with Google Meet is Zoom Meetings.

We thought this article published by PCMag which compared the major players in the market recognizing Google Meet as a better, much better performing and intuitive product, let's find out why together.

Video conferencing: beware of security!

When it comes to video conferencing software, an important aspect is related to security since sensitive data and documents are shared during meetings.

We also advise you not to overlook the all-in-one solutions to be preferred especially if they are integrated with work tools to give continuity to your business.

Before choosing a suitable solution for your video conferencing you also know its weaknesses, here are the Zoom ones:

  • Established to provide video conferencing services exclusively
  • It presents privacy and security problems such as Zoombombing (the practice of interrupting ongoing video lectures and meetings of various kinds with dumb or, in the worst cases, pornographic, racist, and offensive messages), recent scandal of selling accounts to the Dark Web
  • The software must be downloaded and installed
  • The first paid version, the Pro version, includes only 100 participants. The meeting duration limit is 24 hours
  • Cost is higher than all-in-one solutions
  • If you want to use Zoom Meetings to invite other people to meetings, you need to create an account
  • Supported devices: Windows 10, macOS, Linux (including Ubuntu), iOS, Android and Blackberry

Google Meet, connect to video conferencing in one click

In contrast, "Google Meet," reads the PCMagarticle, " offers a clear, consistent and reliable video experience. Security and encryption also stand out. The service requires a hard-to-decipher 25-character string to meet IDs.

Google also meets various compliance certifications, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)."

Google Meet targets two million new users every day, from start-ups to multinational corporations, let's see why:

  • It is an application integrated into a cloud office, storage, and collaboration suite (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Forms, Presentations, and more)
  • Offers productivity and safety at a lower cost than others
  • It is quick to set up, plus there is no need to download the software for either the person organizing the videoconference or the participant (you can connect via browser and App for mobile devices) with a link
  • Free upgrade if you have G Suite Basic or Business to the Enterprise version (extended from July 1 to Sept. 30, 2020) to support Companies during the pandemic:

--larger meetings for up to 250 participants per call

-Live streaming for up to 100,000 viewers within the domain

-records meetings on Google Drive

  • Supported devices: Web browsers (Chrome, Safari and Firefox on PC and Mac), Linux, Android, iOS.

Gmail consumer includes video conferencing app

Let's also not forget individuals, the free version of Gmail consumer in addition to e-mail has all the built-in apps such as Hangout. This is a native app on most Android devices, which is not always used to its full potential.

We remind you because Zoom in the free plan has a time limit of 40 minutes for meetings with three or more participants, while for Hangout

  • there is no time limit
  • the App is an efficient means of making single or group video calls that include up to 10 people simultaneously
  • you don't have to download any software if you connect from a computer (for mobile there is the dedicated App)
  • securely you can connect to the video conference with a link or you can use your phone for audio in a video meeting, as always you can share your screen and present the files you want.
